President Jonathan will need to sustain the broad coalition that propelled him to victory in 2011 in order to retain the presidency in 2015. This means that he must count on the seven Northern states that he carried in 2011 plus five Western states, five Eastern states to add to his six South-South states to prevail again

At a presidential reception for the heroes, at State House, Abuja on Tuesday, President Jonathan showered monetary and national award gifts on players and officials of the team, which won the Cup of Nations for the country for the third time in the competition’s 56-year history

Jonathan, in a statement by presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, thanked Coach Stephen Keshi and all members of the team who worked very hard and played with great focus, dedication, artistry and patriotism to make Nigeria the proud champions of Africa once again after 19 years of setbacks in the competition

The team had its first training session at 6:30pm local time, which is 5:30pm Nigerian time, with Head Coach, Stephen Keshi, saying there is no time to waste ahead of Sunday’s all important final, which is expected to be watched by several Nigerian and international dignitaries, including Nigeria’s President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan; FIFA President, Sepp Blatter; and South Africa’s President, Jacob Zuma
