A princely sum of $100,000,00 has been set aside as prize money for the 17th edition of Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis championship slated for between October 7 to 21 at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club Onikan.
The Chairman, Local Organising Committee, Chief Pius Akinyelure, said the tournament has become a household name in Futures tournaments in the world tennis circles as only two tournaments in America, Italy, Spain, Sweden France and Kazakhstan march its prize money.
In Akinyelure’s words: “The total prize money is $100,000.00 with both the Men’s and Women’s events attracting an equal share of $50,000.00 each.
“Hospitality is thrown in as additional bonus.”
The Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports and the Chairman Lagos State Sports Commission, Deji Tinubu, assured of the state’s continued backing to the championship.
Tinubu said: “The Governor’s Cup Tennis has put the state on the world map as players across the world look forward to it.
“We are equally blessed with a governor (Akinwunmi Ambode) who is very passionate about sports and he is much ready to sustain the legacy.”
The tourney is made up of Futures 4 and 5 with players competing in four events, Men’s single, Men’s doubles, Women’s single and the Women’s doubles.
