Man shoots self, leaves pregnant wife, five kids behind

There were sounds of wailing in the early hours of Wednesday as a businessman, Nwakwa Martins, shot himself at his residence near a popular hotel in Tunga Minna, Niger State, leaving behind his pregnant wife and five children.
It was gathered that the late businessman, who owns a popular electronic shop along Old Airport Road, Minna purportedly shot himself in the stomach around 5am on Wednesday.
Our Correspondent gathered that the deceased left his pregnant wife in a room around 5am and went to another room far from their bedroom to shoot himself, while the wife was deeply asleep.
The wife it was gathered was not aware of her husband’s whereabout when she woke up around 6am.
A search around the house did not lead to anything meaningful.
She then raised the alarm.
It was neighbours who now told her they heard a gunshot in their compound earlier in the morning.
The neighbours and the wife, it was further learnt, went to the part of the house and discovered Martins in his own pool of blood and was immediately rushed to Minna General Hospital, where he gave up.
Our Correspondent learnt that the neighbours reported the incident to Tudun Wada Police Division, Minna.
The DPO, Francis Ekanem, led a team of police to the residence of the deceased and recovered a pump action rifle that the deceased used at close range.
The Police Public Relation Officer of the state, Oguche Adamu Richard, confirmed the incident to our correspondent.
Oguche said it was suspected that the man committed suicide, but did not leave a declaration note.
Oguche stated that the police findings at the residence revealed that there was no sign of external attack on the house, suggesting that it might be a suicide but noted that police is still investigating.
Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Commissioner, Disare Nsirim, has decorated some of the 669 officers of the state police command recently promoted by the police authority, which included 237 police constables promoted to police corporal, 77 corporals to sergeants, 151 sergeants to inspectors, 180 inspectors to Assistant Superintendent, 11 ASP to DSP, four DSP to SP and nine SP to CSP.
