The Federal Capital Territory command of the Nigeria Police on Monday 16th August, 2021 arrested one Matthew Vaaswem, 30, who is suspected to be supplying firearms to kidnap syndicates operating along the Tungan Maje in the FCT and Gawu axes of Niger State.
Vaaswem was arrested at the Tipper-Garage, Gwagwalada, by eagle-eyed operatives of Gwagwalada Division of the command.
According to a statement by the command’s public relations officer, ASP Mariam Yusuf, said preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect belongs to a gunrunning syndicate, and that effort is in top gear to arrest other fleeing suspects.
Exhibits recovered from him include two single barrel Dane guns and two locally fabricated short guns.
In a related development, on Thursday 19th August, 2021, operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Squad in a Joint Operation with vigilantes and hunters rescued three hostages along Sabon Gari and Shapete villages of Kwali axis.
The victims, who were abducted by armed men in the wee hours of Thursday, were rescued during the joint operation.
Yusuf gave the names of the victims as: Amina Ahmadu ,‘f’, 20; Furaira Yahaya, ‘f’, 27; and Jahori Umaru, ‘m’, 35 years.
Operatives from the Gwagwa Division also arrested three suspected armed robbers –Idris Ibrahim, 21; Adamu Husseini, 19; and Mohammed Hassan, 19 – all male, while attempting to break into their victim’s residence in Gwagwa.
One cutlass was recovered from them.
The police spokesperson said the suspects would be arraigned in court upon conclusion of investigations.
