The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Sunday said the successful conduct of the Ekiti State election was a clear indication that security agencies could assist in the conduct of free, fair and credible polls.
Abubakar stated this while fielding questions from State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He noted that what the police did during the exercise was to do what was right and proper as the “lead agency of internal security”.
According to him, the police, in collaboration and partnership with other security agencies, work to ensure safety of lives and property and for people to go and do what they are expected to do.
He said: “We used Ekiti to showcase the fact that it is possible for Nigerian security agencies to conduct free, fair and credible elections in this country.
“This should be taken as a test case; we will do everything to improve upon it.”
Abubakar thanked all Nigerians, particularly the people of Ekiti State, for conducting themselves in an orderly manner.
He also commended all officers and men of all security agencies for discharging their responsibilities diligently.
Ayo Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party defeated incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi of the All Progressives Congress in the Saturday’s governorship election.
