Wives of the 19 Northern States Governors on Tuesday said they are to tackle the issue of drug abuse that has affected youths in the northern part of the country.
Chairperson of the Northern Governors’ Wives Forum and wife of the Niger State Governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Bello, said this when they paid a courtesy call on Governor Abubakar Sani Bello.
She said they have taken upon themselves to embark on construction or rehabilitation of social rehabilitation centers across the entire northern states.
Dr. Bello said: “We have special focus on drugs rehabilitation centers to cater for youths that are into drug abuse.
“The drug intervention programme is the flagship of our intervention, but by next year we will add other area of intervention.”
Dr. Bello disclosed that the climax of the two days quarterly meeting will be the commissioning of a social rehabilitation center built by the state government.
She further said the Forum is in Niger State to also brainstorm on the best way to assist their husbands with the growing level of insecurity in the region on their agenda.
She said: “We are here to support the good works that our husbands are doing in their various states.
“We are concerned about the level of insecurity in the region, which has led to loss of lives of many innocent Nigerians.
“Women are being raped.
“By supporting our husbands, they will be able to achieve their economic goals in their states for the overall benefits of the people.”
Governor Bello while welcoming the governors’ wives assured them of the support of his other colleagues to succeed in their various pet projects in their states.
He said the growing menace of drug abuse, especially in northern Nigeria, is a great challenge and therefore the idea of social rehabilitation center is highly commendable.
He said: “The earlier we start addressing social problem in the region, the better for all of us.
“Drug abuse in the region is a time bomb waiting to explode.”
