RRS arrests robber operating in traffic, two others

The Rapid Response Squad has apprehended three armed robbery suspects in different parts of Lagos State.

The RRS teams arrested a member of a notorious syndicate whose gang allegedly used to terrorise the Mile 2 area of the metropolis.

The suspect, Ugochukwu Otuneme, 33, was arrested on July 28, 2015.

The suspect was said to have been sighted vandalizing the windscreen of a car owner with the intention of robbing him.

Otuneme is a member of ‘In Traffic Robbery Gang.’

The suspect was alleged to specialize in snatching and robbing innocent residents of their belongings during peak period of traffic grid-lock around the Mile 2 area in the state.

Otuneme confessed to the crime.

He was also said to have perpetrated the crimes with a member of his gang, who is now at large.

The suspect reportedly said: “I came to Lagos in 2010.

“Before I joined this robbery gang, I was a bus conductor.

“It was as a conductor that I met one of the gang members who introduced me to his colleagues in the robbery.

“It was the devil who pushed me into robbery.”

Another two suspects, Murtala Saka, 22, and Bashiru Muibi, 26, were arrested around 11pm on July 31, 2015.

They were arrested around the National Art Theatre, Iganmu area of the metropolis for armed robbery.

A police source said: “The RRS mobile teams were informed by unknown victims in two separate cars that armed robbers attacked and robbed them at Ijora-Olopa.

“The teams moved swiftly to the crime scene and arrested the suspects.”

The Commander of the RRS in the state, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, advised drivers to be vigilant in the middle of traffic, urging them to always wind up their car glasses while in traffic jam.

Disu added: “Residents should be courageous enough to report any suspicious movement and criminalities in their neighbourhood to the police.

“We promise that the necessary actions would be embarked upon by the police who are already at every part of the state.

“The stride by the team of RRS to free Lagos State from men of underworld is in tandem with the commitment of the Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, to make the state safe for all and sundry.”
