South African Paralympic sprint star, Oscar Pistorius, said on Friday that he was “consumed with sorrow” one year after the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius shot Steenkamp dead on Valentine’s Day in what he said was an accident.
“No words can adequately capture my feelings about the devastating accident that has caused such heartache for everyone who truly loved and continues to love Reeva,” the 27-year-old wrote on his website.
“The pain and sadness especially for Reeva’s parents, family and friends consumes me with sorrow.
“The loss of Reeva and the complete trauma of that day, I will carry with me for the rest of my life.”
Pistorius had fired shots at Steenkamp, 29, a model and law school graduate, through a locked bathroom door in his Pretoria home, hitting her in the head, hip and elbow.
The sprinter maintained that he took Steenkamp for an intruder and only discovered her identity when he opened the bathroom door.
Prosecutors have maintained that the killing was intentional, and Pistorius’ trial is due to begin on March 3 at the Pretoria High Court.
He rose to fame at the 2012 London Olympics as the first double amputee to compete against able-bodied athletes.
