Speaker, Niger State House of Assembly Rt Hon. Adamu Usman on Thursday expressed support for the new National Policy on Health currently before the National Assembly, saying it will be beneficiary to ordinary Nigerians.
He made this know when the Health Reform Foundation North Central Zonal Coordinator, Dr Idris Mohammed paid a courtesy call at the Assembly complex in Minna.
Usman said the Assembly was happy that the Senate had passed the bill, while the House of Representative is expected to concur soon in the passage of the bill which is expected to address health challenges facing Nigerians.
“We will always support any initiative that is tailored towards improving the health condition of the citizens especially through the passage of bills on health programmes and policy directions.
“The Assembly recently passed into law, the amended state public health bill that seeks to reintroduce sanitary inspectors and enforcement of sanitary and environmental laws in the state.
“Under the law, which was passed early last year, each household is expected to provide a water system toilet facility in his or her house and ensure tidy environment”, he said.
Speaking on the health challenges faced by Nigerians at the local government level in the country, the Speaker said the challenges called for more concerted effort by the relevant agencies to curtail communicable diseases at the grass root.
The Speaker however identified education and health sectors as certain critical relief which the government is expected to provide its citizens as enshrined in the constitution.
Earlier, leader of the delegation and a former state Commissioner for Health, Dr Idris Muhammad said the Foundation was on an advocacy visit on the spread, control and treatment of Malaria.
