EPL: Spurs hold Liverpool

Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to secure a point in a 1-1 draw with Liverpool in Saturday’s entertaining Premier League clash at White Hart Lane.
James Milner had handed an impressive Liverpool the lead from the penalty spot late in the first period, but Danny Rose netted 18 minutes from time to ensure that Spurs continued their unbeaten start to the new campaign.
Dele Alli returned to the Tottenham team as Mauricio Pochettino made one change to his starting XI, while Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp handed a Premier League debut to Joel Matip and was also able to recall Sadio Mane following a shoulder problem.
Liverpool had a golden chance to take the lead inside five minutes when Roberto Firmino set up Philippe Coutinho inside the Spurs box, but the Brazilian could not find a route past Michel Vorm, who made an outstanding save down to his right.
There was hardly time to take a breath inside the opening 10 minutes as both teams continued to commit players in the final third and Christian Eriksen tested Simon Mignolet with a rasping free kick from a wide angle, before Alli and Mane had chances at either end to open the scoring at a vibrant White Hart Lane.
Indeed, the Merseyside outfit took a deserved lead in the 43rd minute of action when Milner converted from the penalty spot after Erik Lamela had seemingly clipped the heels of Firmino just inside the Spurs box.
Liverpool were out early ahead of the second period and came close to a second in the 47th minute when Georginio Wijnaldum sent one towards the top corner, but the ball just drifted high of Vorm’s goal.
Mane then had the ball in the back of the net in the 56th minute after converting a cross from Adam Lallana, but Liverpool’s celebrations were cut short after the flag was raised, much to the surprise of the former Southampton forward.
Spurs remained on the back-foot, but they were level in the 72nd minute when Rose collected a loose ball inside the Liverpool box before somehow finding the bottom corner past the advancing Mignolet.
Next up for Tottenham, who have moved onto five points in the Premier League table, is a trip to Stoke City after the international break on September 10, while Liverpool will host Premier League champions Leicester City on the same day.
