The Peoples Democratic Movement has identified former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, as being experienced, detribalised and capable of pulling Nigeria out of its present challenges.
The party, in a communique made available to newsmen on Sunday, said a man with such qualities is the one required at this stage of the country’s life.
The communique was issued as an outcome of the January 30, 2014 interactive meeting of the leadership of the party.
Signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Rufai Abubakar, the communique said of Abubakar: “Party leaders observed that never in the history of Nigeria has the country witnessed so much confusion and uncertainty. Given this, therefore, the country requires a leader who is experienced and de-tribalised and capable of pulling the country through the woods. The former Vice President was identified as having the capacity to help the country overcome these challenges.”
Abubakar was said to have visited the leadership of the PDM during its interactive session at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja in continuation of his consultation on his next political move.
The meeting was to discuss the party’s preparations for Manual Membership Registration as well as preparations for congresses and National Convention.
The meeting had in attendance members of the National Executive Committee, National Advisory Committee, State Chairmen and Secretaries and invited stakeholders from each of the six geopolitical zones.
The meeting noted that preparations for Manual Membership Registration was complete with all materials required for the exercise ready to be deployed.
It also noted that posting of Membership Registration Officers was complete, but that new banking regulations and the logistics of moving funds have become an obstacle to the take off of the exercise.
It was therefore resolved that sensitization of members at the grassroots on membership registration should continue at an even more aggressive pace pending the resolution of this particular challenge.
The meeting further noted that in view of the delay in the take off of Membership Registration and the difficulty being encountered in obtaining cooperation from security agencies, the commencement of the exercise on February 1, 2014, which should also have been the beginning of the Party Congresses, and the National Convention, initially scheduled for February 22, 2014, were no longer feasible.
It was therefore resolved that new dates for the two exercises were to be worked out and announced as soon as practicable.
A presentation on Guidelines for Membership Registration took place at the meeting also.
The presentation was to further sensitize party leaders to the rules and regulations of the exercise.
Another presentation on the proposed amendments to the Party’s Constitution regarding numbering of articles, number of delegates to congresses and convention, spelling errors, as well as membership of the National Working Committee among others was also made.
Participants were advised to widely circulate and support the proposed amendments.
Party leaders expressed satisfaction with the progress recorded since its registration on August 15, 2013.
They appreciated the efforts of the National Leadership of the party and commended the national chairman for giving the party inspirational and exemplary leadership and urged him to continue to pilot the affairs of the party to success.
