No fewer than 33 deaths have been recorded in 39 road accidents in Anambra State in the last two months.
Sunday Ajayi, Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state, said this at a sensitisation campaign in Umunze, Orumba South Council area on Friday.
Ajayi said 15 of the crashes were fatal and that 11 persons lost their lives in one of them.
He said the record was disturbing and unacceptable as the FRSC was targeting 20 per cent and 30 per cent reduction in crashes and fatality respectively.
He told the audience, which was made up mainly of Tipper drivers, commercial vehicles drivers as well as tricyclists and motorcyclists, that safety was a culture that must be imbibed.
Ajayi said: “The FRSC is ready to work with you.
“ore sensitization will come.
“Please we do not want people to continue to die on our roads.
“Ensure your vehicles are in order.
“Overloading kills.
“Use your seat belt.
“Do not allow underage drivers.
“Let us drive safely and alive to 2016.”
Ikechukwu Okoli, Liaison Officer to Governor Willie Obiano in the council, said Umunze was a busy area, which had witnessed traffic challenges.
Okoli called on commercial bus drivers and tipper drivers to exercise more caution and reduce carnage on the roads, while lauding the FRSC for bringing the awareness campaign to the area.
The event also featured mini road show where motorists were sensitised and safety tips flyers distributed.
