Traditional rulers to hold General Assembly in Rivers

The National Council of Traditional Rulers of Nigeria said on Sunday that unity and wellbeing of Nigeria would be topmost on the agenda of its Ninth General Assembly Meeting scheduled to hold in Rivers State.
Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, the Etsu Nupe and National Coordinator of NCTRN, said at a press briefing in Port Harcourt that the two-day conference would kick off on January 30 to end on January 31.
Abubakar said the conference would hold in Port Harcourt with the theme: “Community Policing as a Catalyst to Crime Prevention: The Role of Traditional Rulers.”
According to him, the sole aim of the council is the unity and wellbeing of the Nigerians.
He said: “So, what we are preaching is oneness and unity of purpose to ensure a peaceful, strong and united Nigeria.
“In this vein, we give support to any government in power via advice for the overall wellbeing of Nigeria.”
The Etsu of Nupe also said the farmers/herdsmen crisis would be part of the discussion at the conference, after which a report would be presented to the government.
He said traditional rulers had been doing their utmost best to engage farmers and herdsmen to ensure peaceful coexistence.
He said: “There used to be grazing routes but the routes were distorted and became farmlands and living houses.
“There are still grazing routes in developed countries but unfortunately for Nigeria, it didn’t make for the future.”
Abubakar stated one of the expectations of the general assembly would be possible solutions to resolving security challenges in the country for Nigerians to live as one.
The National Coordinator of NCTRN stated that as traditional rulers they were not comfortable with the agitations in the country.
He said: “We will try to identify the situations that can cause trouble and proffer solutions to appropriate quarters to apply.”
He thanked Governor Nyesom Wike and Rivers State people for accepting to host the traditional rulers from across the country.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, King Dandenson Jaja, Jeki IV and Amayanabo of Opobo Kingdom, said adequate arrangements had been made for a successful hosting of the conference.
