More facts have emerged on how the joint military operation to flush out vandals from the creeks in some Lagos and Ogun States communities is being carried out.
The Eagle Online is reporting that following the decision of the vandals, who are suspected to be Ijaw militants, to move into the inner parts of the creeks, the military also opted to deploy fighter aircrafts to “smoke” them out.
The Eagle Online was told on Sunday morning that aside from the deployment of the well known Alpha Jet, the military also engaged the EC135 and ATR4 to force the militants out of their hideouts.
A military source said: “The bombing happened because the vandals had moved deeper into the mangroves and thick foliage.
“There, they know, they are safe because our ground forces cannot reach them.
“It is their terrain.
“And it is a difficult one at that.
“They blocked the already narrow and shallow creeks with logs of wood that they cut down in the mangrove.”
As at Sunday morning, the ground troops had started moving in to mop up the areas already opened up.
Among areas of focus are Arepo in Ogun State and Ikorodu in Lagos State.
Informed military sources also told The Eagle Online that some of those who receive the stolen products from the vandals have been successfully tracked.
It was learnt that operatives of the Department of State Services unraveled those that are supplied with the products.
Some of them are said to be located along the ever busy Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
