NHRC wants IG to investigate alleged minor raped to death

The National Human Rights Commission has urged the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, to investigate the case of an eight-year-old girl allegedly raped to death in Akwa Ibom State.
This was contained in a statement signed by the commission’s Chief Press Secretary, Fatimah Mohammed, in Abuja on Friday.
It stated that the Executive Secretary of the commission, Prof. Ben Angwe, called on the police to ensure that the perpetrators of the crime were brought to justice.
The statement said the victim was raped to death in Ikot Ekang in Etinan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State in an uncompleted building.
She was said to have been sent on an errand by her grandfather, Enobong Wilson, at about 6.30pm on Tuesday.
The commission also directed the Akwa Ibom State office of the commission to commence immediate investigation into the matter.
Angwe expressed concern over the rising cases of rape across the country and called on the police to ensure proper investigation to ensure that culprits were adequately punished.
He called on parents and guardians to cooperate with the commission in its quest to bring rape culprits to book.
The executive secretary added that the commission had observed that parents and guardians of rape victims often refused to cooperate with security and law enforcement agents in prosecution of culprits.
