The National Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party rose from its emergency meeting on Thursday, ratifying the suspension of the South West congress billed for August 24 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
In a communiqué read by the acting National Publicity Secretary of the party, Barrister Tony Okeke, the suspension of the congress was informed because of a court injunction.
Consequently, the NEC directed the National Working Committee to monitor the court process and set a new date for the congress without refering to NEC again.
Also, NEC ratified the August 31 date for the party’s special convention and commended members of the committee for the preparation so far.
The convention committee is chaired by a former President of the Senate, Chief Ken Nnamani.
The meeting, which started at 2pm and lasted barely two hours, was presided over by the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, and attended by party chieftains, including President Goodluck Jonathan, Vice President Namadi Sambo and Speaker Aminu Tambuwal.
Also present were almost all the PDP governors, including the aggrieved northern governors.
However, Senate President, David Mark.
Mark is in Washington DC.
He was represented by his Deputy, Ike Ekwerenmadu.
Again, Tukur escaped being booted out of office.
There has been underneath call for his removal allegedly by some governors and key party chieftains.
To ensure a turbulence-free NEC, President Jonathan on Wednesday night embarked on series of meetings with different groups, apparently to get a soft landing for the embattled chairman.
The President held a closed door meeting with Governor Magartakada Wammako of Sokoto State, who pundits opined must have represented the interest of other four aggrieved northern governors.
Speaking with State House correspondents, Governor Wamakko denied the meeting had anything to do with the NEC meeting.
He said: “It is just a routine visit to the President of this great country.”
