According to the latest UNESCO report on gender-responsive education, too many girls and women are held back by biases, social norms and expectations influencing the quality of the education they receive and the subjects they study. Girls are particularly under-represented in developing countries in the African continent; particularly around STEM education and, consequently, in STEM careers.

The initiative, which is being implemented in collaboration with multinational technology company, Cisco, will see Interswitch donate IT equipment including routers and switches to the Cisco Networking Academies in these institutions. The donations are expected to support the students of the Cisco Networking Academies as they explore their passion in the field of STEM and learn to develop solutions to everyday problems faced by Africans.

In order to “incentivize” the students, the organizers of the competition – Interswitch, Africa’s leading payment company, disclosed that out N12.5 million, plus other prizes, for the top three winners, the second-place winner will receive N4 million in scholarship spread over three years, a monthly stipend, and a laptop while the third-place winner gets N1 million spread over one year, a monthly stipend, and a laptop.
