Former President of the Senate, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has commiserated with the Nigerian Army and the families of the soldiers killed by Islamic State in West Africa Province terrorists during an encounter in Askira Uba Local Government Area of Borno State.
Saraki, a former two-term Kwara State Governor, stated this in posts on his social media handles on Saturday.
He condoled with the families if Brigadier General Dzarma Zirkushu and the other soldiers, describing them as heroes who sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Saraki stated: “My heartfelt prayers are with the families of Brigadier-General Dzarma Zirkushu and the three soldiers of the Nigerian Army’s 28 Task Force Brigade, Chibok, who were killed by terrorists while on their way to reinforce our troops at Bungulwa village, near Askira Uba.
“As we mourn the passing of these heroes who selflessly and courageously gave their lives serving our country, I pray that Almighty God will protect the families that they have left behind and continue to strengthen our brave men and women on the frontlines.”
The ISWAP terrorists killed the General, alongside the three other soldiers, while on their way to reinforce troops at Bungulwa village, near Askira Uba in Borno State.
A statement by the Nigerian Army spokesman, Onyeama Nwachukwu, said the troops successfully defended their location and destroyed ISWAP equipment during the battle.
