The Osun State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has intercepted 6,022 kilogrammes of Indian Hemp in the last 12 months.
The State Commander of the agency, Anthonia Eden, disclosed this on Wednesday in a press statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Osogbo, the state capital.
Eden said 219 suspects – 199 males and 20 females – were arrested in connection with the narcotic substances.
She said: “Over 85 hectares of Indian Hemp, otherwise known as Cannabis sativa farmlands, were destroyed in four different locations in the state.
“About 30 hectares was destroyed at Oloro Arinkinkin reserve in Isokan LGA on August 5, 2012 and 10 hectares at Ikeji-Ile in Oriade LGA on September 11, 2012.
“Another five hectares of farmland was destroyed at Oloro Araromi, on September 25, 2012.
“Over 40 hectares was destroyed at Ago-Owu forest reserve, on November 12, 2012, all in Isokan LGA.”
Eden said the agency secured 76 convictions in court, while 102 drug dependent persons were rehabilitated and reintegrated into the society during the period.
Eden said lectures, seminars and talks were organised as part of activities marking the 2013 International Day against Drug Abuse.
She said the command was committed to having a drug free society by educating the people on the dangers of drug abuse and trafficking.
The commander, therefore, appealed to all stakeholders to join hands with the agency in its drive to ensure a society free of drugs.
She said the agency joined in marking the 2013 International Day against Drug Abuse.
