Alhaji Ola Abdulkadir, the Grand Khadi of the Kwara Sharia Court of Appeal, has called for stiffer penalties against perpetrators of ritual killings across the country.
He made the call at the 1439 Hijrah (Islamic New Year) celebration in Ilorin on Friday.
Abdulkadir also called on renowned preachers and teachers in the town to intensify effort in preaching against the alleged involvement of some Islamic clerics in the obnoxious acts.
The Grand Khadi said such nefarious activities negated the teachings of Islam and what Ilorin had been known for.
Abdulkadir urged government to set necessary machinery in motion to ensure the protection of innocent lives through regular surveillance of the community.
He called for a sober reflection on life activities of individuals on the celebration of the Islamic new year.
Abdulkadir also expressed concern over the persecution of Muslims in some part of the world particularly in Burma, Afghanistan, Yemen and the Middle East.
He said: “They are being persecuted not for any offence other than being Muslims.
“This to us is a violation of their fundamental human rights which the UN entrenched in Human Right acts.
“We, therefore, call on the people concerned to rise and correct this anomaly which the enemies of Islam are perpetrating all over the world.”
The Grand Khadi also sought for the a declaration of Hijrah day as public day as done in some other states.
Alhaji Abdulmumeen Ayara, the National Missioner of the Ansarul Islam Society of Nigeria, in his sermon warned Muslims against involvement in forbidden acts that negated the principles of the religion.
Also speaking, Alhaji Abdulkadir Orire, the Chairman of Kwara Council of the National Hijrah Ummatul Islamiyyah, appealed to government to create employment for the teeming unemployed youths to keep them away from social vices.
Orire also called on the government to intensify effort on security and power supply to enhance socio-economic activities in the country.
The Islamic cleric however, admonished Muslims to always invest in Islamic causes as well as to give their children proper Islamic education.
He frowned at the killing, selling and buying of human parts for rituals, describing it as highly ungodly, un-Islamic, barbaric and sinful.
The Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, warned perpetrators of evils residing in the city to either stop or relocate, saying the law would soon catch up with them.
About 50 western and Islamic schools participated in the march past to commemorate the Islamic New Year.
