The 18-year-old nursing student of the Federal Teaching Hospital, Ido-Ekiti, diagnosed as one of those infected with Lassa fever disease in Ekiti State has fully recovered, an official has said.
The Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr. Ayo Majekodunmi, confirmed this on Monday Ido-Ekiti.
Majekodunmi explained that the victim responded to the various stages of treatment throughout her stay at the isolation ward of the hospital.
He said: “The patient was at the weekend discharged and consequently released to her family, haven been satisfied fit.
“The medical feat was due to the cooperation and commitment of staff of the hospital to the ethics of the medical profession on preservation of lives.
“The discharged victim did not contact the disease in the school, but while on holiday sometime late last year with her parents and siblings.
“The girl confessed to have consumed many cans of long-stored soft drinks while at home on holiday, through which rats were believed to have had contact with the opening.”
However, Majekodunmi said all members of her family had been tested and found to be negative.
Majekodunmi later presented certificates of exemplary service to members of the medical team that handled the girl’s case, while she was undergoing treatment.
He appealed to the Federal Government to further reinforce the hospital with the required fund as well as equipment to enable it handle similar cases in future.
The CMD urged that the medical team be compensated by government to act as encouragement to others in future.
The girl’s case was the first to be reported in the state by the government during the first week of the outbreak of the disease in the country.
