Some Christians in Adamawa State on Sunday celebrated their Easter at home in compliance with the State Government lockdown order due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A News Agency of Nigeria correspondent who visited some Churches in Yola, the Adamawa State capital, reports that many Chapels followed the directive.
The report also said that some Churches had conducted Easter Sunday mass with fewer than 50 followers as advised by the state government as part of measures to contain the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
In his Easter message, Most Rev. Dami Mamza, the state Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, called on Christians to intensify prayers, vigilance and comply with the lockdown directive.
Mamza said: “The pace at which the Coronavirus is spreading in our country today calls for prayer, vigilance and compliance with relevant bodies in the struggle to curtailing the further spread and the far-reaching damages of the disease.
“As a Church in Adamawa State, we shall continue to comply fully with the directives of the state authorities in curbing the spread of the virus.
“We therefore call on you dear brethren to cooperate maximally with the relevant government agencies in their efforts and measures towards the welfare of our people in the face of this killer disease.”
Mamza noted that the importance of the Holy Week and Easter in the history of Christian faith cannot be overemphasised.
He said in order not to celebrate Easter without any Liturgical activity, “we encourage smaller units of congregational assemblies of 50 people only for the Holy Week ceremonies and Easter Sunday Masses and Services”.
Also, DSP Sulaiman Nguroje, Spokesman of the Adamawa State Police Command, told NAN that so far there has not been any report of breach of peace in the state.
Prof. Abdullahi Isa, the state Commissioner for Health, equally said the state had no single case of COVID-19.
“All the six suspected cases earlier reported were proved to be negative,” Isa said.
