The United Nations Development Programme and the International Foundation System on Wednesday topped the list of accredited observers for the forthcoming council polls in Delta State.
Besides those on the list, the Independent National Electoral Commission has positioned itself as a self-determining observer in the exercise.
Already, the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission has accredited 12 organisations as independent observers during the exercise billed for October 25.
When the executives of the Asaba Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists visited the commission’s headquarters in Asaba on Wednesday to find out the DSIEC’s preparedness for the poll, its Chairman, Moses Ogbe, flanked by his commissioners, said the office of President Goodluck Jonathan on Inter-Party Relations and the heads of media organizations have been charged to partner the commission for a successful conduct of the election.
Ogbe said the commission has not reneged on its avowed promise to deliver on a credible, free and fair election in the state, hence it has established Election Situation Centres as emergency units for the election.
Accoding to him, the commission has vowed to break the jinx that elections are won only by the political party in power.
He said: “We are doing all these to tell the world that we have nothing to hide.
“And to make sure that come October 25, the reality will be declared.
“Qualified political parties for the election only need to do their home-work well, campaign vigorously, mobilize for votes.
“They can be rest assured that the votes will count come October 25.”
Ogbe said the Public Affairs Department of the commission is open to contributions, complaints and suggestions on how best to conduct the elections successfully, even as he urged the media to beware of disgruntle politicians who are fond of raising false alarm.
