An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday ordered that a 29-year-old civil servant, Gabriel Awaye, be remanded in a correctional centre for allegedly defiling a 13-year-old girl.
The police charged Awaye, who lives on Agbawaye Street, Command, Agbado Oke-Odo, Lagos State, with defilement.
Magistrate T.O. Tanimola, who did not take the plea of Awaye, ordered that he should be remanded in Kirikri Correctional Centre.
Tanimola, however, directed the police to send the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
Tanimola adjourned the case until November 12 for the DPP’s advice.
Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, ASP Victor Eruada, had told the court that the civil servant committed the offence on June 2 at his residence.
He said Awaye lured the girl into his apartment and defiled her.
Eruada said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Section prescribes life imprisonment for defilement.
