A Chief Magistrates’ Court in Makurdi on Tuesday ordered that a 40-year-old businessman, Ismail Umar, who defiled a 15-year-old girl, be remanded in a correctional centre.
The police charged Umar with abduction and defilement, punishable under the provisions of Sections 4(2) of the Abduction, Hostage-Taking, Kidnapping, Secret Cult and Similar Activities Prohibition Law of Benue, 2017 and 284 of the Penal Code Law of Benue, 2004.
Magistrate Vincent Kor did not take the plea of Umar for want of jurisdiction to entertain the matter.
Kor ordered the police to return the case file to the office of the Benue Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.
She adjourned the matter until Dec 22, for further mention.
Earlier, the prosecution counsel, ASP Hyacinth Gbajor told the court that the complainant, Abubakar Mohammed reported the matter at the ‘D’ Division Police Station, Makurdi on October 31.
Gbajor alleged that Umar sprayed the victim with a substance which made her unconscious and he defiled her.
