College of education expels 556 students over poor academic performance

The Niger State College of Education has withdrawn 566 students who did not measure up academically in 2017/2018 academic session.
Hajia Hadiza Kolo, the Academic Secretary of the College, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna on Wednesday.
Kolo said though the affected students came with flamboyant secondary school certificate results, but they could not cope with the standard in the college.
She said: “We do not have a choice but to show them the way out. This is a citadel of learning and academic rules cannot be distorted for their sake.
“Most of them have eight credits at a sitting, but could not justify it by the evaluation they were giving during the semester examinations of the institution.
“We are not against any student making nine or eighth credits at sitting, but when it is made from a “miracle centre’’ there is bound to be problem because they cannot cope with academic rigours.
“There is no way the school can keep a student with twenty carry-over, we cannot do that because the institution’s name is at stake here.”
Kolo said that some students who passed the qualifying examination to the college were still not able to pass the semester examinations.
She said: “This menace is everywhere; it is a canker worm eating up the society now. A student cannot come with a flashy result and be shown the way out after the first year.
“It is absurd and it beats my imagination that a student will have a good result and end up being withdrawn.”
News Agency of Nigeria reports that 139 students were withdrawn from School of Education, while 44 students were withdrawn from School of Languages.
In School of Technical Education, seven students were withdrawn; 95 were withdrawn from School of Vocational Education.
NAN also reports that 130 students were withdrawn from School of Sciences while 151 students were withdrawn from the School of Arts and Social Sciences.
