Britain says it plans to contest a UN panel’s decision that WikiLeaks founder, Julian Assange, is subject to arbitrary detention.
A statement by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office on Friday said: “The UK will formally contest the opinion of the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention that Julian Assange is a victim of arbitrary detention.
“This changes nothing, we completely reject any claim that Julian Assange is a victim of arbitrary detention.”
The statement said Assange is “voluntarily avoiding lawful arrest by choosing to remain in the Ecuadorean embassy”.
Assange, 44, a computer hacker who enraged the US by publishing hundreds of thousands of secret US diplomatic cables, has been holed up in the embassy since June 2012 to avoid a rape investigation in Sweden.
