The governorship candidate of Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Osun state, Mr. Olusegun Akinwusi has stated that his government will give unemployment benefits to employable youths if elected as governor in the August 9 polls.
Akinwusi while addressing across-section of youths in Ibokun, headquarters of Obokun Local Government on Tuesday stated that SDP is against a “quasi-unemployment” arrangement tagged volunteer job.
The ex-Head of Service berated Nigerian leaders for abandoning the nation’s youths, saying the Arab spring was caused by the neglect of the younger generation who later revolted against their “oppressors”.
“No one has plan for youth today. I am out to contest because of my passion for our younger ones. I am not looking for money or power but I want to sacrifice everything I possessed for the betterment of tomorrow.
“But if I say I am comfortable, will those people around me say so. I supposed to be enjoying my retirement now and be playing around with my children but I cannot sit down and see lives of younger ones being ruined just because we don’t have leaders who cared for them.
While promising that his government will embark on massive recruitment of youth into the public service, Akinwusi explained that he will use his past experience to ensure that more jobs are created for the about a million youth in the state.
“While it is an obvious fact that government cannot employ all job seekers, we shall consider a sizeable numbers for immediate appointment in all critical areas in our government. Our government will tackle head-on the issue of vocational training to develop available skills in our youths.
“Efforts would be made to encourage our youth to be employers of labour through acquisition of necessary tools and equipment towards same. Subjects to availability of funds, unemployment benefits may be experimented in this state for our employable youths”, he explained.
According to him, SDP has a clear vision of how to move the state forward and inform the youth not to allow professional politicians buy their voters’ cards, adding, “that is your power and don’t sell your future”.
The youths who are from various communities across the local government promised their support for the SDP candidate.
