Why I sponsored bill on Federal College of Education, Gumel – Senator

Senator Abdullahi Gumel has said that he sponsored the bill establishing Federal College of Education, Gumel, to meet the growing education needs of his constituents.
Gumel told the News Agency of Nigeria in an interview in Abuja on Friday that converting the school from state to a federal institution, would help to widen its capacity to accommodate the growing population.
The lawmaker, who is Chairman, Senate Committee on States and Local Government Administration, said that the school, currently known as Jigawa State College of Education, was established in 1976  and had since operated as a state institution.
He said: “We were thinking that by the time state universities come into Jigawa, it will be made one of the state universities.
“Be that as it may, now we seek that it should be converted to Federal College of Education because there is none in the state.
“Jigawa State is not claiming any refund. The college as it stands now has 222 academic staff, with 32 of them having doctorate degrees.
“So, what we want is for the Federal Government to take over and run it properly.”
Gumel expressed optimism that President Muhammadu Buhari would sign the bill into law to assist the teeming youth in state and across the country meet their needs.
He said: “The Federal Government is not incurring any expenses in taking over the college.
“The infrastructure and equipment would be automatically transferred when the Federal Government takes over.
“The Federal Government would not have to incur expenses to build from the scratch with the country’s meagre resources.”
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Senate on Tuesday passed the Bill establishing Federal College of Education Gumel.
On the standard of education in Nigeria, the lawmaker urged all critical stakeholders to work together to reposition the sector.
