Robin Van Persie went some way to answering his critics with a stunning strike as Manchester United crushed Hull at Old Trafford.
The Holland striker scored the third, after goals from Chris Smalling and Wayne Rooney had put Louis van Gaal’s side in the driving seat.
United were dealt an early blow with an injury to Angel Di Maria in the 14th minute.
The club’s record signing was subbed off for Ander Herrera with what looked like a hamstring strain.
Smalling opened the scoring, turning in from inside the six-yard box, after a goalmouth scramble started from Marouane Fellaini winning a header against two Hull defenders.
The ball dropped to Smalling and he hit goal wards, with Allan McGregor failing to keep it out.
Rooney then doubled the lead five minutes before the break with a low strike from the edge of the box after Van Persie’s lay off.
The ball swerved into the bottom corner beating the Scotland keeper.
Van Persie then rounded the game off with his fourth goal of the season.
He drove his effort, left-footed, into the roof of the net, making it three nil to the hosts.
United go back above Arsenal into fourth, just two points below Man City who play Southampton tomorrow afternoon.
