The Joint Action Congress of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Jos chapter, has embarked on a three-day sit-at-home strike.
According to members of the two unions that make up the congress, the strike became necessary to force the Federal Government to pay up the outstanding balance of N30 billion Earned Allowance owed the workers.
Bitrus Dagwer, NASU Chairman, and Esther Ezeamato, SSANU Chairperson., who led the workers on a peaceful protest on Wednesday in Jos, said that the strike, which commenced on Wednesday, July 17, would end on Friday, July 19.
They said that the decision was taken by the national body of both unions as a last resort because of government’s failure to implement the 2009 agreement.
“JAC of SSANU and NASU is demanding for the release of N30 billion for the payment of our outstanding EA covering 2012 to 2016. We want this paid without further delay.
“We will not accept the payment of the allowances in tranches,” the duo declared.
The union officials called for immediate review of the 2009 agreement, stating that the agreement was due for three reviews as contained in the document.
They further stated that the peaceful protest was mandatory for all branches, adding that a mega rally would be held in Abuja on a date to be communicated to members.
