The two unions embarked on the strike to press home the demand for the release of their withheld four months salaries.
The deadlocked meeting, held on Wednesday at the Conference Hall of the Education Ministry, started at about 1pm
The unions are Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities and National Association of Academic Technologists.
It was gathered that the protesters, carrying various placards and singing to register their grievances, blocked vehicular movement and hindered the free flow of traffic in the environment.
Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, made the appeal in a statement on Monday.
The directive to commence the seven-day warning strike was issued by the leadership of the union on Friday.
The National President of NASU, Hassan Makolo, made the call during an emergency meeting on Monday in Abuja.
The President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim, and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, revealed this.
The union’s reaction to the incident was contained in a statement signed by Peters Adeyemi, its General Secretary on Sunday in Abuja.
Peters Adeyemi, General Secretary of NASU, said this in Abuja while addressing a news conference on Wednesday.
Unilorin SSANU Chairman, Naheem Falowo, stated this on Monday while fielding questions from newsmen in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital.
The suspension is expected to take effect from Wednesday.
The acting Registrar, B.S. Momoh, said the step was necessary as the unions, through their actions, were distracting the university from its development vision and mission.
The association solicits a uniform salary structure for members of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and SSANU to end the ongoing strike in the education sector.
They are Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions.
Registrar, Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), Prof Ishaq raised this concern, describing the ongoing industrial strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) as unnecessary.
The students on a joint protest are from Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago Iwoye; Tai Solarin University of Education, and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, all in Ogun State.
The Front in a statement e- Signed by Dr Tanko Yunusa pointed out thatit made the call in the overriding interest of our nation, but more particularly for the huge number of students, parents, academic and non- teaching staff in all Federal and state-owned universities across the country who have been affected directly by this avoidable strike.
The university blamed the extension on the persistent industrial actions embarked upon by various staff unions in the Nigerian university system.
