Former world heavyweight champion, Tyson Fury, said Brit rival Anthony Joshua’s recent statement regarding his desire to become a billionaire in the sport could be detrimental to his longevity at the top.
Fury, who himself is yet to return to action since earning a career-high purse of £5 million against Wladimir Klitschko, believes Joshua must put his love for the sport ahead of any monetary targets.
Joshua faces Klitschko on April 29 at Wembley Stadium in an event that could earn the 2012 Olympic gold medallist an eight-figure sum through purse, Sky Box Office revenue and endorsements.
‘AJ’ knows a victory could catapult him into even bigger mega-bucks with further unifications against fellow belt holders Joseph Parker and Deontay Wilder, although sponsors outside the ring could be worth much more than what Joshua earns during his short periods inside it.
As Joshua is primed by promoter Eddie Hearn to take over the sport’s most lucrative division, Fury could cut a frustrated figure on the outside.
A comeback has been touted a few times already this year, although it could take Joshua to claim another couple of his titles in order for ‘2 Fast’ to knuckle down to a full camp.
It’s been reported this week Fury has admitted he now weighs upwards of 27 stone (380 pounds), which could prove tough to shed the longer the Ring Magazine title holder continues his exile.
Suspension and license issues have rumbled on for Fury, along with rumours of a failed drugs test in 2015 and substance/mental problems, all of which are seemingly blocking any imminent path to redemption for the one-time king.
