Three policemen, three others killed in Kano bomb blast

A suspected Boko Haram suicide bomber who disguised as an officer of the Nigeria Customs Service detonated a bomb in Kano late on Friday evening.
Six people, including three policemen, were feared killed in the explosion, which occurred along Maiduguri Road, opposite a filling station owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Hotoro area of the metropolis.
An eyewitness told Saturday Tribune that the bomber approached a police checkpoint in a Toyota Sienna vehicle, wearing a Customs uniform, and, in the process, detonated the bomb, which ripped through the area, killing the cops and two other civilians apart from the bomber himself, while several others were injured.
Residents said the explosion was so loud that it shook many buildings in the area.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Magaji Majiya, confirmed the casualty figure to Saturday Tribune on Friday night.
An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria that the incident occurred at about 7.20pm, adding that many people buying fuel at the station sustained injuries.
The witness said there were sporadic gunshots after the explosion, which threw the area into confusion and made many residents to run for safety.
The spokesman of the Joint Task Force, Captain Eze Ekechukwu, confirmed the incident to the NAN.
Ekechukwu, however, declined to give details, but assured that investigation had since commenced.
A combined team of soldiers and policemen as well as firefighters were seen cordoning off the area as of the time of going to press last night.
