The ongoing strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors on Wednesday crippled activities at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital as patients was seen waiting to be attended to.
Aliyu Sani, who brought his wife for antenatal care on Wednesday, noted that the strike was doing more harm than good, as patients were left for hours without doctors attending to them.
Sani said: “My wife and I, have spent more than five hours waiting to see a doctor at the antenatal unit.
“I want to appeal to both the Federal Government and resident doctors to dialogue and suspend the strike.’’
Another patient, Favour Ezenwata, said that she was attended to by a medical consultant, but many other patients were just moving about trying to get doctors to attend to them.
Ezenwata said: “The patients are at the receiving end. The consultants are trying, but more hands are needed to do the job.
“We hope both parties will reach an agreement to find a lasting solution to the problem on ground.”
Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer, UATH, Frank Omagbon, said that consultants in the various disciplines with the house officers are attending to patients.
Omagbon said: “It is a nationwide strike; we don’t have any internal issue with the association; that means that it is something beyond our control.”
He expressed the hope that the doctors and the Federal Government would reach an agreement, so that the strike would be called off.
The Vice President, National Association of Resident Doctors, UATH chapter, Dr Chijoke Chukwuma, said the doctors had been patient enough with the government.
According to him, the strike will be suspended if their demands are given due attention.
