Six policemen arrested for lying against IG

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested six policemen who lied, using the name of the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar.
Immediately the deception was discovered from the Force Headquarters, Abuja, the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Prince Umar Manko, was ordered to arrest the six policemen.
One of them, identified as Abubakar Idris, escaped from police cell at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters, Ikeja.
A manhunt has begun for Idris while the other five are under close watch.
It was gathered that the policemen were actually no longer members of the Nigerian Police Force when they committed the offence.
They were alleged to have been kicked out of the Nigeria Police Force in 2006 over corrupt practices.
But apparently not satisfied with their dismissal, the six men had schemed and plotted for ways to come back to the force.
After fine tuning their plan, they went ahead to forge a signal, claiming that the Inspector General of Police had reinstated them into the force.
The signal also carried the signature of the Force Secretary, which would make anybody to believe that the fake documents were genuine.
Six of them came to Lagos State Police Command and presented the document to the command.
The command, believing the authenticity of their documents, generated genuine signals under the state command, which they present to the Divisional Police Officers to the different divisions they were posted to.
The six men had worked for several months in their different divisions before the scam was discovered in Abuja.
The IG immediately ordered for their arrest.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Administration, Lagos State Police Command, invited the six men to the command.
The men had all come from their places of work, unaware that their secret was out.
As soon as they arrived, they were taken into custody. Subsequently, they were handed over to the provost of the command for trial.
The provost was also expected to charge them to court.
The situation however came to a standstill, after Idris, who was posted to Adeniji Adele Police Station, escaped from the cell.
A police source said: “The truth of the matter is that Mohammed Idris and other policemen were put in what police call ‘open cell’.
“Police use to do it in the spirit of esprit de corp.
“After all, it could be any policeman in their situation.
“If a policeman is put in open cell, he will not be handcuffed or leg chained.
“He can be allowed to go and urinate on his own and go to eat on his own with any guard.”
It was also learnt that Manko, furious over the escape of Idris, ordered for speedy orderly room trial of the five remaining suspects.
He also ordered that all five should be charged to court for forgery and impersonation.
