The proposed removal of subsidy by the Conference Committee on Public Finance has split delegates at the ongoing National Conference.
While some delegates kicked against the removal of fuel subsidy by the government, saying there is nothing wrong if the government continues to subsidize petroleum product in Nigeria, some who supported the removal of fuel subsidy argued that Nigerians are not benefiting from fuel subsidy.
They said only a few individuals have hijacked the benefits from the subsidisation of petroleum products.
Speaking on the subsidy, Senator Ibrahim Idah said there is nothing wrong if government continues to subsidise fuel for its citizens.
But Sergeant Awuse, in his submission, supported the removal of fuel subsidy, saying that most Nigerians are not benefiting from it.
Also, Jonathan Temlong supported the removal of fuel subsidy, arguing there is no where outside Abuja you can buy fuel for less than N120, even as he advised that government should stop importing products that it is producing.
In his own submission, the former Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Ahmadu Ali, advised that the removal of the subsidy should be gradual that any attempt to remove it absolutely will cause crisis.
