Simone Grego, UNESCO’s Science Adviser, said on Thursday in Abuja that proper management of Nigeria’s water resources could increase the nation’s Gross Domestic Product by two per cent.
According to Grego, lack of proper management of water resources had negative impact on the nation and by extension humanity.
He said: “If you manage your water resources well, it can add up to two per cent on your GDP.
“But If your water resources are not managed properly, it can have a negative effect on your GDP.
“It can be up to minus six per cent on your GDP in Nigeria and less than 14 per cent in some other parts of the world other than Nigeria.”
Grego said there was direct connectivity between water management and job creation, adding that the nation has a lot to gain if its water resource bill is signed into law.
“If the water bill is approved, there will be huge direct employment opportunity for Nigerians in water and sanitation projects as recommended in the bill, as well as indirect jobs,” Grego said.
The adviser added that Ogoniland clean-up was an environmental restoration project that could create a lot of jobs, saying: “It’s a good initiative.”
UNESCO presented the report at the 23rd Regular Meeting of the National Council on Water Resources, where all the state water ministries were represented.
