Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa, former governor of Sokoto State, has stressed the need for unity among presidential aspirants of the Peoples Democratic Party to enable the party scale through in the presidential election in 2019.
Bafarawa, also a presidential aspirant of the party, made the remark while addressing PDP state delegates in Kano on Friday.
He was in the state in continuation of his tour of states to solicit the support of delegates ahead of the forthcoming PDP presidential primary.
According to him, unity and political stability are important factors required among all the stakeholders and party leadership in order to ensure success of the party in 2019.
Bafarawa expressed concern over political bickering and attacks among party elders in the media, saying it could destroy party unity and cohesion before the general election.
He said: “There is no reason whatsoever to see some certain party elders fighting each other through media; such can destabilise our collective unity and chances to winning elections.
“All such noise and threats among party leaders across board are meant to create disunity by some of those who are not happy with our current success in the country.”
He expressed optimism that he would defeat other aspirants in the forthcoming national convention of the party.
Bafarawa said he had all that was needed to lead the party to success in the 2019 presidential election.
He said: “I am not afraid, I will never see any of the aspirants as a threat to get our party ticket.
“I will surely secure the mandate.”
Earlier in his remarks, the Kano state PDP Chairman, Senator Mas’ud El-Jibril Doguwa, assured Bafarawa of total support of PDP in Kano.
Doguwa said: “PDP Kano State belongs to genuine party supporters, not any individual, because no one can intimidate or frighten us to succumb easily.
“Bafarawa, you are a real democrat, man of honour and great leader who understands how to tackle the problem of our country through collective and peaceful means.”
