Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, is at the moment locked in a meeting with chieftains of the All Progressives Congress.
Obasanjo was elected as president on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
He was also, for a long time, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the PDP.
However, he has been at loggerheads with the President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan.
The height of the development was the 18-page scathing letter he wrote to Jonathan about two weeks ago.
So also have five governors elected on the platform of the PDP defected to the APC owing to a face-off with Jonathan and the leadership of the party.
Among APC chieftains attending the meeting with Obasanjo are former Head of State, Alhaji Muhammadu Buhari; former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; the Interim National Chairman of the APC, Chief Bisi Akande; and Governors Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso (Kano), Abiola Ajimobi (Oyo), Abdul Fatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Rochas Okorocha (Imo).
Others in attendance are the former Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu; former House of Representatives Speaker, Aminu Bello Masari; former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff; former Kwara State Governor, Senator Bukola Saraki; former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai; former Minister of Aviation, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; the APC Interim National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed; former PDP governorship candidate in Borno State, Alhaji Kashim Imam; and Senator Bob Effiong.
Obasanjo told his visitors before they went into a closed doors meeting: “I am a card carrying member of the PDP but the politics I play traverses Nigeria, Africa and world in that order.
“I am a democrat and one of the essential ingredients of democracy is opposition.
“A democracy that has no opposition built into it is not democracy.
“As an opposition, you are enhancing democracy.
“You are at home.
“You are welcome.
“I will just appeal that the politics you play is politics without rancour, without bitterness, with decency, that has Nigeria at heart.
“I am an incurable optimist about Nigeria.
“I am totally committed to Nigeria and nothing will divert me from that commitment.”
Earlier, Tinubu had appealed to the former president to join the APC in its mission of rebuilding Nigeria.
