The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria says it will verify the operation licences of all practicing nurses and midwives in the country, before the end of the year.
The Secretary-General and Registrar of the Council, Alhaji Farouk Abubakar who disclosed this at a news conference on Tuesday in Ilorin, said the exercise was to ensure sanity in the profession.
Abubakar said that the exercise had been codenamed “Operation Show Your License of Operation and Practice”.
He said that a task force would be constituted to carry out the assignment in conjunction with the various state councils.
He said that the exercise would also be conducted in partnership with law enforcement agents, to ensure apprehension of the nurses and midwives practising without operational licences.
He said: “The council has improved its production capacity of issuing licences to the genuine members and has been announcing that in the past eight months.
“It has issued out and renewed over 22,000 licenses to the qualified members and warned that no one can practise without an updated licence.
“The council has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the National Board for Technical Education.
“The board will issue Higher National Diploma certificates to all graduate nurses and midwives, after their education.”
The secretary-general said the council would constitute a committee to be in State and National Assemblies to press for the enactment of laws that would check quackery in the profession.
Farouk lamented that dispensing of fake and counterfeit drugs as well as quackery were, the greatest problems facing healthcare delivery in the country.
He called for a closer working relationship among state governments and it members to ensure sanity in the profession.
He also urged NMCN members to participate in workshops and training programmes to update themselves on the use of information and communication technologies to enhance performance.
