The meeting between the National Executive Committee of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives and the Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Thursday was boycotted by the union.
The meeting, which was scheduled to hold at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital, Ile-Ife, Osun State, was aimed at finding a lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the union.
The Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs Division of the Hospital, Olu Bello, made this known in a statement made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Ile-Ife.
Bello explained that the union executives had to boycott the meeting due to its late commencement.
It would be recalled that the meeting was organised by the Board of Management and the representatives of Minister of Health to discuss the union’s demands.
According to him, representatives of the minister included Dr Joseph Amedu, Director, Hospital Services, Federal Ministry of Health; and Moji Okodugha, the Director Nursing Services, of the ministry.
He said the executives of the union walked out of the meeting before the commencement of the meeting, which was slated for 2pm.
The deputy director explained the delay was caused by the briefing of the Chairman of the Board, Mathew Urhoghibe, to the representatives of the minister.
Bello said that the chairman was informed of the complaints of the union leaders, which prompted him to come out of his office in order to appeal to them.
He added that Urhoghibe apologised to them for the lateness of the meeting and told them not to be restless.
The deputy director said that the union executives were not happy with the word “restless” and urged the chairman to withdraw it.
He said that this resulted in a heated argument that led to the walk out of the union leaders.
He said the meeting was expected to discuss the skipping of CONHESS 10, promotion of Nurses from Chief Nursing Officer on GL 14 (CONHESS 12) to the post of Assistant Director of Nursing without university degree.
The others include payment of uniform allowances to nurse tutors and shortage of health assistants and creation of more vacancy for the post of Deputy Director.
It would be recalled that the NANNM, OAUTHC chapter, has been on strike since September 11.
