NUGA 2014: Athletes condemn OAU facility

The sporting facilities at the 24th Nigerian University Games Association being hosted by the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State has come under heavy criticism for being below the standard, just as blames were traded on officials for conspiracy.
Just few days after the commencement of games, athletes and officials could not hide their disappointment at the state of facilities the met on ground.
The track and field athletes, coaches and officials were disappointed at the tartan track which fell below the required standard as prescribed by International Amateur Athletics Federation.
Also, the volleyball players were livid at the rate which the volleyball courts were pulling off their feet.
Some officiating officials told journalists that the constructing firm did what they described as bad job and not acceptable going by the reputation of OAU.
The Vice president of the Athletics Coaches of Nigeria, Femi Emmanuel, who was a former student of OAU, opined that the tartan track was not of international standard.
Emmanuel said the texture is sub-standard and can only be used for training and not for a competition like this.
Doris Jacob, a former international athlete and bronze medalist at the Olympics, noted: “The layer of the track is supposed to be in three stages but here it is one layer, which makes it waterlogged when rain falls.”
