The Niger State House of Assembly on Wednesday approved slightly over N63 billion as the 2014 appropriation bill for the 25 local government councils in the state.
This was after the House heard the report of the joint committee on local government affairs, finance and appropriation, public accounts and ward development projects on the 2014 local government councils appropriation bill.
Presenting the Committee’s report, the Chairman, Hon. Jacob Majin Gana, representing Lavun constituency, said a total revenue of N63,047,013,149 was projected to finance the 2014 local government appropriation, with a recurrent expenditure of N46,317,609,748 and a capital expenditure of N16,725,403,401 for the 25 local government councils in the state.
Gana said that after carefully correcting all the grey areas, including revenue generation, recurrent and capital expenditure and subsidy reinvestment, the committee recommended the proposed revenue of N63,043,013,149, with a slight alteration in the recurrent expenditure hiking it to N46,417,609,748 while reducing the capital expenditure to N16,625,403,401.
According to Gana, the internally generated revenue in 2014 is projected to rise as a result of the programmes put in place by the state to reinvigorate and strengthen the IGR of the state, adding that to this end, 10 per cent state allocation to local government councils will increase.
Giving the highlights of the 2014 local government budget proposal, the Committee chairman said concentration would be given to the provision of constituency project in all the wards, provision for the construction of feeder roads, completion of 10km joint state and local government road projects, rehabilitation of infrastructure, provision for waste disposals management and disaster relief.
When the report was thrown to the floor of the House, the House unanimously adopted the report of the committee and passed the bill, which would soon be sent to the Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, to be signed into law.
