NAWOJ president calls for media organisations’ support in training women journalists

The President of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, Ifeyinwa Omowole, has called for the support of media organisations in the training of female journalists in the country.
Omowole assumed office as president on May 18 after defeating Fatima Abdulkareem with 469 votes to 198 votes.
The NAWOJ president, while touring media houses in Lagos State, said there was the need to bring back capacity building programmes for female journalists.
She said this was the primary reason for setting up NAWOJ.
While visiting the News Agency of Nigeria, where she is a Senior Editor, Omowole appealed to the agency’s management to support the four pillars of her manifesto.
She said her manifesto’s four pillars are: “Training, training, training and retraining of members.”
She added: “I am here because this is home.
“I started journalism here in this building.
“This is where the foundation of transparency and integrity began.
“I am therefore here to say thank you and seek continued support to train my colleagues.
“NAWOJ was set up to bridge the training gap of female journalists.”
Responding, the Head of NAN, Lagos Office, Dele Bodunde, who had earlier recommended the training of journalists while receiving the delegation, pledged the agency’s support for NAWOJ.
Bodunde also emphasised the need for discipline among media practitioners.
He said: “I want to appeal that we lay emphasis on upholding integrity in whatever we do and adhering to the ethics of this profession.
“We should make sure that everybody who says he/she is a journalist in Nigeria is sound enough in comparison with journalists in every part of the world.”
Also, the Managing Director of the Sun newspapers, Femi Adesina, who is also President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, said the Guild would collaborate with the association.
“Make sure you build NAWOJ to the level of becoming a virile association,” Adesina said.
Moleye Balogun, the Acting General Manager, Radio Lagos/Eko FM, urged members of NAWOJ to be united so as to be able to achieve progress.
The delegation led by Omowole also visited the Lagos Television.
