Murder cases on the rise in Lagos – Manko

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Prince Umar Manko, on Tuesday bemoaned the high level of murder in Lagos State in the last one year.
While addressing the press, Manko revealed that about 111 murder cases were recorded in 2013, which was higher than that of 2012, which recorded 106 cases.
The Lagos CP, in his submission, said drastic measures will be taken to reduce the menace to the barest minimum.
He said: “We cannot fold our arms and allow crime take over the state.
“We will harness all machinery at our disposal to put it in check this new year.”
Manko, while reeling out his achievements so far in Lagos State, mentioned some successful operations carried out by his officers and men within the last year, which saw many of them winning laurels and awards here and there across the country.
The achievements, according to the top police brass, included the arrest of armed robbers and recovery of arms during the robbery incident at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos; the arrest of the kidnappers of the mother of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala; and the arrest of notorious armed robber kingpin, Abiodun Ebenezer Ogunjobi, better known as Godogodo.
Umar, however, added that the achievements recorded so far are not without challenges.
He said: “Society is dynamic as crime is dynamic.
“As crimes are being tackled by law enforcement agencies, criminals naturally will attempt to evolve new trends or patterns to thwart the efforts being made.
“Owing to the sophistication in the commission of crime and variations in the modus operandi, new methodologies, strategies and approaches have been adopted by security agencies to stay ahead of the criminals.”
Manko, in his conclusion, commended the consistent support of the state government, especially through the Lagos State Security Trust Fund and the local governments, which assisted the State Command in tackling the menace of crimes in Lagos State.
