May Day: Kano promises to offset outstanding gratuities

The Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has pledged to settle outstanding gratuities of retired civil servants in the state.
‎Ganduje, who made the promise at the 2018 May Day celebration in Kano on Tuesday, said despite the financial challenges, his administration has been responsive to the welfare of workers.
According to him, the state Government had settled gratuity, death benefits   and pension arrears to the tune of N12 billion.
He said: “We sustained prompt payment of monthly salaries ‎of civil servants and public officers to the tune of N9.2 billion since inception of this administration.
“We also paid bereaved family allowance to the tune of N45 million to the families of deceased civil servants.
“My administration also facilitated staff training and manpower development for which an aggregate sum of N380 million has so far been expended.”
Ganduje said that the state government ‎had already submitted a position paper to the tripartite committee on the national minimum wage constituted by the presidency supporting the salary increase of the workers.
He commended civil servants in the state for supporting his administration, saying that the government would continue to create a conducive environment for increased productivity.
He said this would be done through the implementation of policies and programmes that would better their lives.
Earlier, the chairman of NLC in the state, Comrade Kabiru Ado-Minjibir‎, requested the governor for the payment of earned allowance for workers of state tertiary institutions as is applicable to their collegues in the federal service.
He further urged the governor ‎to re-instate workers dismissed from service due to salary over payment.
Minjbir then appealed to the governor to implement annual increments, promotions and other staff allowances as approved by the state executive council last month.
He said: “We also call on the state government to immediately settle 1,831 workers under paid in the month of January 2018 which cost over N38 million.”
The NLC chairman commended Governor Ganduje for his continuous support for workers in the state and prompt payment of salaries.
NAN reports that the State government is owing the state chapter of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners an accumulated gratuities of over N13 billion.
