Ahead of Wednesday’s presentation of the 2013 Budget to the National Assembly, the President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, on Tuesday night met with senators.
At the meeting, also attended by ministers, Jonathan and the senators agreed that the executive and legislature must work together in the interest of the citizenry and the development of the country.
The meeting was held at the official residence of the President of the Senate, Senator David Mark, in Apo Legislative Quarters, Abuja.
Jonathan at the meeting said although the presidential system of government prescribes separation of powers “but our goals and interest are the same to wit the welfare of our people and the development of our country.
“We face the same challenges.
“We face the same elections and the problems are the same.
“So, we must come together and work like a team to achieve the same goal.”
To achieve a harmonious relationship between the executive and the legislature, Jonathan called for regular social interactions in order to cement the accord and erase grey areas or misconceptions.
Apart from the social interaction at the national level, he advocated that similar arrangements, both at the zonal and state levels, be put in place so that the aspirations of the people could be met, adding that the future of Nigerians and the progress of Nigeria should be paramount.
Earlier, Mark had said the interaction between the executive and the legislature was aimed at celebrating their oneness and the similarity of purpose for the future of Nigeria and Nigerians.
Mark called for mutual cooperation between the two arms of government in order to bring the much needed development to the doorstep of every Nigerian.
In his remarks, the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, reiterated the need for the executive and the legislature to work in harmony in the interest of all Nigerians and the survival of democracy.
