Some patients in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Uyo, have called on the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to incessant strike by doctors in the country.
The patients made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Uyo on Wednesday.
They said that the current strike embarked upon by the resident doctors had adversely affected their well-being.
The NAN Correspondent who visited the UUTH reports that the patients were seen loitering around the hospital premises.
The offices occupied by resident doctors were under lock and key.
Some patients, who spoke with NAN, said they had no option but to seek medical attention elsewhere due to the strike.
Elizabeth Umoren, a patient, appealed to the Federal Government to urgently resolve the issues that led to the current strike embarked on by the resident doctors.
Umoren said that due to her illness, a specific doctor was assigned to her but due to the strike; she was unable to see the doctor.
Similarly, Ubong Akpan, whose relative is critically ill and requires urgent attention, pleaded with the Federal Government to address the situation in order to save lives.
Akpan said: “Since this strike started, we have been here at the hospital; we have not seen any doctor to attend to us.
“We are pleading with the government to find a lasting solution to the current strike because the development is seriously affecting us.”
Christiana Etta appealed to the striking doctors to seek other means of addressing their demands rather than embark on strike.
The President, National Association of Resident Doctors, UUTH Chapter, Dr Utuk Aniekan, said that the action was total and indefinite, until all the demands were resolved by the Federal Government.
