A Minna High Court on Tuesday convicted two middle aged men – Sani Abacha IIiyasu and Abubakar – to one year imprisonment without option of fine over illegal possession of firearms in Niger State.
The two were arrested and detained at Kagara prison for being in possession of illegal firms arms without license.
The prosecuting police officer told the Chief judge that the two suspects were arrested with AK47 rifle with 12 rounds of live ammunition and detained in the prison since June 2014.
According to him, the offence contravenes Section 27, sub-section 1A of the fire arms Act caption F28 Laws of the Federation 2004.
Delivering the judgement, the Chief Judge of Niger State, Justice Fati Lami Abubakar, said their sentences are to run concurrently since the day the two suspects were brought to the prisons.
Justice Abubakar wondered why the two suspects were detained without conviction base on the time of detention.
Also at the Kotangora Prison, eight awaiting trail sus[ects had their cases reviewed by the Chief Judge, who ordered three other suspects with land matter who were detained to be granted bail.
